We took 2 boxers down to Poole to box 2 top lads on their home show in Poole, generally when you go away to shows boxing their top lads you are generally up against it regarding the results. We needed the bouts and although we hoped the results would go our way we were realistic and new if it was close we probably wouldn't get the result we wanted.
We had a long drive down to Poole at the height of rush hour traffic on a Friday evening so had plenty of time to discuss our tactics and scenario's.
Before the bouts we used Donald Schön - Reflection-on-action model to discuss past bouts and tactics used, we talked about what went wrong in the bouts and if there were tactics we could use during these bouts to hopefully give us the outcome we desired.
we were able to use the Donald Schön - Reflection-in-action model during the bout and as we had a plan we were able to use this to give a more structured reflection of the rounds during the 1 minute interval.
At the end of the evening we sat down to discuss the results and how we could improve as both coach and boxer and whether the information during the bout was clear enough to be followed by the boxers?
For the post bout reflection we based our conversation on the Graham Gibbs - Reflective Cycle. We were able to talk through the headings and base a plan for our next match based on these processes.
Results - both lost on split decisions, both good performances and unlucky not to get the wins.
Example of what was discussed:
What happened? Tactics - information given - how it was given.
What are/were your feelings and emotional responses? Levels of responses, ie excited, agitated, panic.
What was good/bad? Clear instruction, instruction given at the right time - random instruction, information sometimes given too early or late.
What sense can you make of the situation? Being confident in the information given therefor making best of the situation.
What can you conclude generally from the experience? Working better as a team to give the information across in a more relaxed manner, not shouting over each other we can get clearer messages to boxers.
What will you differently in the future? One voice, calmer approach to giving information across, get clearer feedback from boxer during bout.
Next show this Saturday in Harrow.
